Frost were asked to add much needed to space to an existing bungalow to meet the demands of a young family. The site posed sensitive surroundings with a mix of house sizes and styles on the road. The design therefore looked to retain as much of the existing bungalow as possible while adding a floor to provide the sleeping accommodation. This extra space was incorporated into the roof space to minimise impact on its neighbours. The ground floor was also extended to the rear and side.

The client was keen for the appearance to have Cape Dutch style reflecting their South African roots. A palette of render and slate was therefore adopted together with a roof profile of tall gables.

The ground floor includes a dedicated games room to cater for the family’s passion for table tennis and sports. Life will centre around the open plan L-shaped kitchen/living/dining space which benefits from light via sliding glazed doors and rooflights. A vaulted ceiling over the kitchen adds drama and height to this space.

Solar panels in the recessed crown on the roof reflect the client’s intention to build a sustainable home accepting their responsibilities for the future and their family.
